24th Oct – WORLD POLIO DAY

One Day | One Focus | Ending Polio.

Get ready for our 6th annual World Polio Day event, co-hosted with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We will stream live from Gates Foundation headquarters in Seattle, Washington to bring together more than 50,000 viewers around the world. Join us as global health experts and celebrities share our progress on the road to polio eradication.

Rotary continues to take a strong leadership role in the effort to eradicate polio, as was on display recently during the 2017 Rotary Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Rotary committed to raise another $50 million each year during the next three years. The Gates Foundation will match those contributions 2 to 1 for up to $100 million a year. Combined, those contributions will add another $450 million toward disease surveillance, responses to outbreaks, and continued vaccinations of more than 400 million children annually.

COMPLIANCE LEVEL IN NIGERIA

NIGERIA POLIO UPDATE, 2018

  • No new cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) were reported in the past week. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2016 remains four and no cases have been reported in 2017. The most recent case (by date of onset) was reported in Monguno Local Government Area, Borno, with onset on 21 August 2016.
  • Nigeria continues to implement an emergency response to the detected WPV1 strain and circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) strains affecting the country (last detected in 2016).
  • The next round of sub-national immunization days is scheduled for March, 2018.
  • Detection of polio cases in Nigeria underscores the risk posed by low-level undetected transmission. As part of the emergency response, subnational surveillance continues to be strengthened. See More >>>
